Jack in the Green

Collecting leaves and flowers to make head wreaths

On May Day, Hastings celebrates the traditional festival ‘Jack in the Green’. This ancient custom sees participants dressing in green, donning headdresses, and wearing masks made of leaves and flowers. They join a lively procession through the streets of Hastings, stopping at pubs and bars along the route.

Our residents joined in the festivities by collecting foliage, crafting masks and headdresses, and reminiscing about past ‘Jack in the Green’ celebrations they have enjoyed in the past.
